Collaborate with our team of three to four data scientists-in-training, who will dedicate approximately four months to your project at no cost. With expertise in modern data science tools and techniques, including statistical analysis, R and Python programming, Power BI, Tableau, and deployment, they'll create a high-quality product tailored to your needs (e.g., dashboard, report, scripts, pipeline, or similar).
The deliverable will be a data science product with excellent code documentation, testing, and overall quality. This opportunity also presents the possibility of discovering future talent among our students, who may become valuable additions to your team.
By participating in the DANA program, you'll establish a relationship that can lead to exciting research collaborations between partners like your organization and Langara College.
Capstone partners will provide our students data that addresses a specific challenge or question faced by your organization. This data can be sourced from your own organization, or it could be freely available online. To ensure a successful collaboration, we recommend providing clear descriptions and manageable datasets that can be easily loaded into SAS, R or Python.
As a partner, you'll be expected to commit to regular meetings with the students (ideally in person) throughout the project duration. These meetings will provide valuable guidance and feedback for our students as they work towards completing their capstone projects.
To ensure a mutually beneficial collaboration, partners must agree on data sharing, licensing, and intellectual property rights. The DANA program is committed to supporting agreements that benefit both students and partners. Please note that students may share aspects of their capstone work during their job search, so some level of disclosure will be necessary.
In case, cloud computing resources are required for the project, please provide these resources as part of your partnership with us. DANA do not have the capability to supply these resources internally.
Student groups are expected to live up to the following professional standards:
Communicate productively, identify sub-problems that could be worked on individually by team members, and integrate contributions of team members into a final product;
Work approximately 20 hours per week on the project;
Document and present their work at Langara and possibly at the capstone partner’s organization (using written, oral, and visual means) at various points throughout the course.
Setting up and/or maintaining a database.
Software development. Although our students learn some basic principles of software development, they are not generally equipped to build production-level software systems. Software development projects would also typically be less well aligned with the students’ interests and the learning objectives of the capstone course.
1. Where do the students work on the capstone projects?
Students are encourage to work at the Langara Vancouver campus.
2. Can an organization submit more than one project proposal?
Yes, assuming you are willing and able to supervise multiple capstone projects simultaneously, giving each one the attention it deserves. In this situation it’s possible that we will give priority to only one of the projects, so as to give other candidate partners a chance at participating. Also, the projects should be sufficiently different so that there is little overlap, and partners should be willing to put in time to work with each student group.
3. Will the students sign a non-disclosure agreement?
Yes, this is possible
4. Do partners need to know data science to participate? Do partners need to be able to suggest approaches for the students to take in addressing the proposed problem?
No, this is not a requirement. In fact, a major part of our capstone course is for students to decide on approaches themselves for addressing the problem using data science. We do not encourage our students to simply apply some requested data science techniques to the problem. However, we do encourage our partners to share their ideas if they have them!
